Steaming ahead in to Christmas, only 56 sleeps to go.
Are you all prepared? Have you posted early or made alternative
arrangements for moving your normal postal items through a reliable
freight company rather than the Royal Mail?
For those of you with smaller items this may not be an option. I do
hope that the workers in the UK realise that they may be shooting
themselves in the foot. The more chances they give to the Customer to
find a different route the more likely it is going to happen and then
that client will not return. Even as a small forwarder such as
ourselves has been approached to see what we could offer and for the
larger postal item its not far away. If we can do it as a small company
i can imagine that the larger players in the small parcel market would
find it easier and cheaper and therefore very tempting....
As for the Guernsey Post situation, i must say that i would have to
agree with the people that are wanting to keep the postal service as it
is. If the service is opened up to alternatives then they will indeed
cherry pick the more profitable services leaving only the high
cost routes. Guernsey has lately been saying to keep things local, well
the GPO is local is it not (please correct me if you know its owned by
a Russian Billionaire or similar) lets keep hold of the things that
actually make money, regulate them extensively to keep on their toes
but don't try and kill what is currently making the island money, we
need it too much!

(Bank Holiday Monday)
Well, summer is
almost over... the temperatures were
coming down but all of a sudden we get hit with another 25 deg C., and
for those of you that know me you will be well aware how much i like
the heat... Bring on the cooler months!!
As fuel prices continue
to fluctuate and in an unstable market, Huelin-Renouf Shipping announce
they have bought a new ship and are adding a second to offer
a
daily service to Guernsey and Jersey. I wish them the best of
luck as this is a brave move.
Whilst contemplating what
more i could write i consulted the Boss and was told to add... "You
have a beautiful wife", so here on the Lucas Freight blog is that
statement... can you see the balding thumb print...?
I hear on
the grape vine that a couple of the larger UK based firms have changed
local agents and one has even set up its own operation.... as with most
cargo to the Islands the big contracts are fought over and for one it
was obviously still too expensive as they now have their own presence
on the island. Cost always seems to be a problem not only to the
carriers but to the public as well, but on an island where a mechanics
labour rate is in the region of £ 50 per hour i
struggle to see
how these sort of rates are accepted but when it comes to physically
moving an item from a UK address all the way to Guernsey (or vice
versa) we can receive comments like, "ooh, that's expensive",
or, "really, i thought
it would be less than that!"
for close to £ 50 we can move 10 Kgs from anywhere in the
UK...
this includes, collecting, handling / transiting at UK hub, trucking to
the ferry port, handling again, shipping to Guernsey (or
Jersey),
handling, AND local delivery...

I cant believe its
been 6 months
since I have done this... well, recession and all that how are we all
coping? Luckily I cant say we are feeling the pinch (touch wood).
The freight business seems to have become a little more
aggressive in Guernsey,
where once it was a live and let live situation.
Weather
Page / Twitter feed.
I would like to thank www.gyweather.com
for allowing us to use their data on our site... its a really excellent
addition and used a great deal by us in the office.
Memo to self, I must try and come here more often and post about the
Guernsey freight industry or what is happening around the islands.
Whilst I think of it,... ever thought about taking photography more
seriously but were afraid of the well established clubs or don't have
an expensive digital SLR, well look no further... www.cleverdicc.com.
its a great little club that doesn't take itself too seriously and its
members don't either, fun, a beer or two or just put the world to
rights... have a look or send an e-mail, they will be only too willing
to let you know the in's and out's.

It
is becoming quite a regular thing for me at the moment to find i have
an e-mail saying someone has posted a message here... only to find its
a spam message selling pills and potions.
Is
it me or does anyone else
wonder if these spams actually gain any business, surely everyone knows
not to use the links and buy from these obscure companies??

Hi
All
Well
where was that long warm summer i was hoping for... your guess is as
good as mine...
Well
its been a long time since i have posted anything.. sorry... however..
have a look at the following site.
www.bbc.co.uk/thebox
On
many occasions, far too
many to mention, we get asked what happens to a shipment, how long does
it take etc... well this must be one of the most interesting
experiments i have seen that will help remove the mystery around a
containers movement.
Hope
this will prove interesting for you all...

I was trying to think when to start this 'new'
blog... now i think is perfect timing...
With just having our local island wide elections
there are many new faces that have been elected to the 'Deputy' post.
Good for Guernsey?? I think so, new face = new
ideas, new energy and a new and different perspective.
With the introduction of "Zero-10" TAX
in Guernsey this year, we,
as will ALL other "employing" companies in Guernsey, have to be looking
for more business due to the extra burden placed on us to fill the
local "Black Hole", with increases to Social Security, Road Tax added
to fuel (inflationary due to extra costs on delivering goods to
consignees) no Tax allowance increases, increased Capital Expenditure
for a considerable amount of major projects locally, forgotten
in the
past like runway repairs / extensions, quay repairs, new cranes?? and
all financed by what ?? who knows.....
These new faces will have a massive learning curve
ahead of them...
GOOD LUCK Ladies and Gentlemen!

Well, it only seems like a few weeks ago that we
changed the look of the website, added this "blog" area.... and here
we are nearly 5 months later, not good for a
blog... sorry!!
No real news or pictures yet.. just the usual
thing affecting the freight industry as a whole, fuel increases and
general rate increases. Not a great deal that can be done but the two
major shipping lines in to the Channel Islands have done a
good job of keeping their increases below RPI / Cost of Living, how?
who knows... good for the Customers at the end of the day though...

Its an absolute definite that for small Guernsey

Cor! Well done
to Lucas, them, for their part in setting up the Bagabattery
recycling scheme. Guernsey
is a great place to live and it’s nice to see companies like
Lucas doing something to help look after the island. Gestures like
this, which are motivated by the desire to make a difference, rather
than an attempt at corporate green-washing really deserve to be
rewarded. The scheme so far has collected over 100kgs of batteries
which would otherwise be polluting our landfill for hundreds of years
to come. Not only that but the useful chemicals and materials which
will be recovered from them will reduce our need for raw materials from
other sources and save energy over other methods of obtaining and
processing these raw materials, which helps the planet as a whole. So
make sure when your batteries are dead – don’t just
bin ‘em, Bag ‘em and take them to Lucas Freight at
the White Rock.
